“Sitting full in the moment, I practiced on the God-awful difficulty of just paying attention. It’s a contention of Heat Moon’s—believing as he does any traveler who misses the journey misses all he’s going to get—that a man becomes his attentions.” This is from a delightful book, “Blue Highways” by William Least Heat-Moon, published in 1983. The book details his observations of people and places as he travels the perimeter of the United States, always on the back roads, almost never on an ...

We send you greetings to from West Chester, Pennsylvania. We write to update you on the progress of Emmanuel‘s health condition. On a general note we say “so far so good”. We give thanks to God for the gift of complete healing which continues to “trickle” in, endlessly from his spring of life. Ezk 47: 9. Emmanuel has been improving slowly but steadily. Presently he is able to walk a good distance without a cane. The numbness on his lower limbs is gradually fading as the spinal cord recovers.

My Beloved Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ. I am reminded of Jesus weeping over Jerusalem. Surely he weeps with us today. Following the tragic shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, which further undermined any sense of trust in the fairness of treatment of blacks and other persons of color, we are now stunned by the wanton act of ambush in Dallas last night resulting in the deaths of five police officers and wounding of ...

A UMNS slideshow showing the damage in West Virginia is available for viewing. Dear Sisters and Brothers of the New York Annual Conference, The news of flooding from West Virginia has shown great devastation to a part of our nation that is already economically vulnerable. “I know I did the right thing, but I cannot stop feeling guilty for doing so.” Some decisions are not only difficult to make, they are also heartbreaking to make. His wife has advanced dementia and is difficult for anyone to manage, let alone a 90-plus-year-old spouse. She would not allow aides or companions into her home —that was the first option. She would not consider moving to an assisted living facility. She was closed to every available option. So she stayed where she was longer than was...

Beloved Sisters and Brothers of the NYAC, How long oh Lord? How long? Yet another mass killing, this time the worst in American history, leaves us stunned and heart broken. This heinous act of terrorism which has taken the lives of 50 innocent persons and left 53 wounded, many critically, calls us to renewed prayers for an end to violence. Because this act was specifically directed at the LGBTI community we must especially renew our advocacy for justice for all. I call on all of us to ...

It has to be one of my least favorite things to do. It also happens to be the most spiritually moving thing to be asked to do. It is a request I’ve heard more than once. This time it began with a phone call. “Jim, could you meet us at the hospital. Mom is doing very poorly and we have decided to remove her from life support. We would so appreciate it if you were there when that happens.” I hurriedly cleaned up, got dressed and headed for the hospital, where I was greeted with a question that, I ...
