Reaching Out — February, 2009

NYAC Mission and Outreach Reaching Out
February 2009
hug
"..... about fiteen or sixteen different sisters came to help us, and each one, on leaving Calcutta, said the same thing, 'I have received much more than I have given and I can never be the same person again; because I have touched Christ and, I have understood what love is.  What it is to love and be loved!"
From My Life for the Poor by Mother Teresa

The stories from our VIM teams reflect this same experience and so it is appropriate that the newly revized Mission and Outreach Newsletter, Reaching Out, makes it debut near Valentine's Day and reminds us, 'chocolate is great, but love it ain't'.  Thanks to all our VIM members for reaching out and sharing their journey to a better understanding of what it is to love and be loved.

iowa 2 Iowa Team 6  The Frozen Heartland   Team Leader: Paul Hibbarad

"When I signed up to do the mission trip I believed that I was going to selflessly give to people who needed my help. My only purpose was to lend a hand to people who suffered through a disaster. What I didn't count on was the rewards that GOD blessed me with."
...And lastly and importantly the friendships and bonds that were created and formed are everlasting. When I signed up for the mission trip I truly thought that I was going to give, give someone else help, give someone else some free labor. What I did not expect was to receive: to receive the gifts that GOD gave me. To be filled with clarity and purpose, to understand my mission and my desire to continue on the faith journey that I have only just begun."
This reflection from Johanna, one of fourteen members of Iowa VIM Team 6 that recently traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sums up the experience of everyone who chose to follow Jesus to the frigid heartland.  The need for healing (of homes, lives, and emotions) was great, and continues to be.
All week long "we saw and experienced God working and moving amongst us and through us."  One of our team members, Karen, pondered, "Why did we have to go so far from our homes to experience God there?"  Karen had been on three previous VIM's to Biloxi and part of what she was asking is why Iowa? (It's so much colder than Biloxi in January!!!)  She answered her own question by stating, "It was exactly where we were supposed to be.  Thank you Lord for putting us there and allowing us to be open enough to let you lead."   Another team member, Mike, echoed those feelings in a reflection on his experience by writing, "I feel now that I understand what it means to serve God and my fellow man.  Truly so much good can come from lowering your guard, stepping out of your comfort zone and giving yourself over to what Jesus calls the two greatest laws: love God and love your neighbor...through patience and kindness on both sides we all helped one another."

Message on house: 'Lucky Me  I Had Great Neighbors  I Will Miss You All.

Costa Rica Team 1

Hammering and Kicking

Can you hammar and kick a soccer ball at the same time?  Costa Rica Team 1 members lead by Frank and Nancy Hawkins came close.
In January 2009, Simsbury UMC sponsored a trip to Siquirres, Costa Rica with 14 team members from SUMC, Memorial UMC in Avon, and two local congregational churches.  While part of the team helped the St. Mary's staff with the Vacation Bible School, the other part of the team worked on the local elementary school.
Seventy children came to VBS on the first day, 90 children on the second, 120 on the third, and who knows how many children on subsequent days!  What a wonderful way to share God's love!
Other team members were involved with construction tasks at the school which included stuccoing and painting walls, painting rebar windows, installing electricity and the beginning of floor tile installation.  Each afternoon ended with a soccer game with excitement at World Cup level.
Team members found that what they were able to give the people of Siquirres was minimal compared to the joy that they received from the beautiful people of Costa Rica!
Tyler Burr, grandson of team leaders, Frank and Nancy Hawkings, sums it up for the team. " I have told all of my friends at school about the trip to the point where they are almost sick of hearing about it...I learned so much from the people living in Costa Rica(both culturally and verbally in Spanish). My appreciation for what I have up here and at home has nearly doubled. I can thank you guys for giving me a truly meaningful break. I feel like I have done something good for the world rather than be just another typical, lazy, unmotivated college kid. Love,Ty"

The VIM t-shirts have been the impetus for so many conversations with strangers and are treasured by many VIM members.  There are only a few of the navy VIM t-shirts left in the Mission and Outreach Office, but a new design is in the works.
Be sure and submit favorite photos and stories of your VIM t-shirt in action.
SUMC VIM Teams Pass in the Air
Here I am Lord.  Where will you send me?

VIm airplanes pass in airSimsbury United Methodist Church (SUMC) continues to be alive with an excitement for both domestic and international VIM work!  On January 17, 2009 as the Costa Rica team was flying home, an SUMC-sponsored Disaster Recovery Team to Biloxi, MS was departing.  Seventeen VIMers, as they are called at SUMC, worked in Biloxi on two homes damaged during by the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina.
Unlike years past, these two families each had a young child, and team members loved meeting them and seeing their little faces as their homes became transformed throughout the week.  In one home, team members diligently sanded and textured sheetrock while others painted the exterior and interior of the house.  Meanwhile, three other team members removed old flooring and installed ceramic tile in a second home's kitchen and bath - these three guys earned the title "The Tile Team".
Thirteen out of seventeen of the team members were veterans to Biloxi, with this being the third or fourth trip for many.  When asked why she kept coming back, one team member said, "I keep coming back because there's still 'unfinished business' here".  When someone asks us, "So, when are you going to be all done there?"  Our response is simply, "When God stops calling us and sends us elsewhere!"
Thank you for taking the time to read the newly revised newsletter.  This is a work in progress, so please check with your VIM teammates to see if they received a copy.  We may not have email addresses for everyone.
Also, please send your contributions for the next newsletter to disaster@nyac.com The deadline is March 16, 2009.
Thank you to each VIM team leader and VIM member. We hope to see your name on a team list again, soon.
