The Big Move at Quinipet

9/23/2009

This is an exciting week at Quinipet!  Last December, the Seymour Family on Shelter Island donated a house to Quinipet. For the last four years, it has been evident that Quinipet needs a Welcome Center to handle increased year-round business, as well as a central location for the Quinipet offices and a nurse’s suite and infirmary that meets the Suffolk County and New York State Department of Health codes. Our plan was to purchase and install a modular unit, which would have nearly the exact same specifications as the house the Seymours have donated. The donation reduces the cost of the project by about $150,000.

On Tuesday, the house was taken off its original foundation and put on wheels so it could be towed to Quinipet. This morning, it made the 9/10-mile journey to the camp property.

The house is resting temporarily at the edge of the ball field. We will pour a new foundation next to the Dining Hall, set the house, and do the necessary construction and renovation. The house will form a “T” with the Dining Hall and be connected by a breezeway. The nurse’s quarters and infirmary will be constructed in the new basement. The reception area and Quinipet offices will occupy the main floor of the house. Both the house and the Dining Hall will be finished in cedar shake.

The Welcome Center will be named in honor of George and Sue Klein, who for the last 42 years nurtured Family Camp week each summer at Quinipet. Family Camp participants are spearheading a fundraising campaign, and we have identified at least four constituent groups we will be approaching in the next few months. We are still arranging for a bridge loan, and last night, had a very positive meeting with a United Methodist Church on Long Island. We expect their decision in a few weeks. We aim for the structure to be operational by summer 2010 and will dedicate it during Family Camp Week.
