Letter to Newtown UMC from Missouri Church

12/17/2012

December 17, 2012

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Yesterday morning the people of Campbell United Methodist Church gathered for worship here in Springfield, Missouri, and we thought of you. We prayed for you. And we wept with you.

United by a connection that transcends physical distance, we realized the truth of the idea that “when one member suffers, all suffer together.” We pray that God’s peace, the peace that truly “surpasses all understanding” will be with you during this indescribable time. And we give God thanks for your ministry in Newtown, providing a presence of love in the midst of such unthinkable grief.

We are sending you two boxes of prayer shawls and pocket prayer cloths for you to distribute to people as you see the need. These prayer shawls are intended to be tangible expressions of God’s loving care. They have each been knitted with prayer, and yesterday morning they were laid along the prayer railing in the sanctuary. During worship at each service, the congregation came forward and laid hands on these items as we prayed.

We are sending twenty-two shawls (plus the pocket-sized cloths). Not knowing exactly what your need might be, consider this a “first wave.” We have more that we would like to send, and I hope that you will let me know if more would be helpful.

Please know that we will continue to pray for you and your community. You are not alone.
And may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, continue to guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Shalom,
Andy Bryan, Pastor                                            Melissa Dodd, Associate Pastor
