Let us remember Evelyn S. Day, who died at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, Connecticut, on August 24, 2014, at 84 years-of-age.

Evelyn was born in Canaan, CT, to Lois and Ennis Silvernale. She grew up in Millerton and attended elementary and high school in the Webutuck Central School District, where she graduated in 1947. After working for three years, Evelyn attended the St. Francis Nursing Program, graduating in June, 1953. For forty years, caring for others was at the core of Evelyn’s character and work as a registered nurse for Sharon Hospital, Sharon, CT, Wassaic Developmental Center, Wassaic, New York, Crouse Irving Hospital, Syracuse, NY, and Clifton Springs Hospital, Clifton Springs, NY.

While in nursing school Evelyn met her future husband, Herbert G. Day, Jr., of Arlington, NY. Herbert and Evelyn were married July 12, 1953 at the United Methodist Church, Millerton, NY. As a Local Pastor, Rev. Day was appointed to the Millerton Church in 1990; he served there until his retirement in 2001. They built a home and settled in Millerton, and later Clifton Springs, NY, where they had a vacation home on Lake Ontario near Pulaski, NY. They loved walking with their dogs to watch the sunsets and sharing the beach with their family.

Evelyn is survived by her beloved husband, Herbert, of Millerton, her cherished children, Mary Thompson of Sharon, CT, Sally Hart of Catskill, NY, Nan Herow of Millerton, NY, and Gilbert Day of Millerton, 11 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Her love for family, cooking, and gardening will always be remembered. Evelyn especially loved singing and sharing music, especially with her children, grandchildren and the children at church. On sunny summer days Evelyn loved to go for drives with the windows open and the radio turned up loud.

A celebration of Evelyn’s life was held August 29, 2014 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Pine Plains, NY. Donations in Evelyn’s memory may be made to the Pine Plains Food Pantry, P.O. Box 515, Pine Plains, NY 12567; or the First United Presbyterian Youth Music Ministry, P.O. Box 313, Pine Plains, NY 12567.
