Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Joyce Lidstone Thornburg, 91, who died on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Continuing Care of Brooksby Village in Peabody, MA.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 66 years, Rev. Richard Thornburg. Rev. Thornburg retired from the New York Conference in 1994. Churches he served were: South Highland, Garrison, NY; Van Cortlandtville, Peekskill, NY; Trinity, Richmond Hill, NY; Southhampton, NY; Floral Park, NY; and Norwalk, CT. He was Connecticut West District Superintendent from 1978-1984, and later served Memorial UMC in White Plains, NY and Memorial UMC in Avon, CT.  

Born in New York City, Joyce was the daughter of John B. and Olive (Woodall) Lidstone. She was a graduate of Evander Childs High School in the Bronx, continued her education at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and received her master's degree from Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. 

Joyce was employed as an English teacher at Norwalk High School in CT for many years and also worked for at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, NY. As a lifelong educator, she did her best to engage and inspire all of her students. As a volunteer she spent more than 10 years as a docent at the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art in Hartford, CT. She had an abiding interest in showing and interpreting great art to children.

Joyce influenced many lives over the years, but her family was paramount. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be deeply missed by her family and her many students and friends.  

In addition to her husband, Richard, she is survived by her sons, Richard W. Thornburg and his wife, Lynette, of Suffield, CT and John D. Thornburg and his wife, Elizabeth, of Dallas, TX; her grandchildren, Kate Betz and her husband, Dave, of Austin, TX, Jonathan Thornburg and his wife, Amanda, of Plano, TX, Jennifer Osowiecki and her husband, Noel, of Windsor, CT and Stephanie Stone of Windsor, CT. She has seven great grandchildren.
