"On behalf of the Methodist Church in Haiti and the Haitian people, we thank you. Thank you all for your outpouring of love, support and Christian brotherhood in our great hour of need. Haiti has suffered a great tragedy, and to rebuild, recover and strengthen, it will take us all." Click here to read the full letter>>
Thank you so much for your willingness to volunteer with disaster recovery in Haiti. There will be a great need for volunteers to help rebuild once the initial crisis has settled. At this time, it is not safe or possible for volunteers to go to Haiti. The city of Port-au-Prince and the whole country are in crisis with severe lack of fuel, food, and water. There are significant transportation and security challenges. Bishop Joel Martinez, Global Ministries' interim general secretary, has alerted bishops to the inadvisability of sending volunteers at this point. Click here to read his memo>>

Disaster Spiritual Care Volunteer (DSCV)
Your DSCV credential was considered valid for two years with re-credentializing required in order to continue as a DSCV. This process involves a “refresher course” and a background check. Please contact Rev. Mel Kawakami (melkawakami@mac.com) as soon as possible if you are interested in renewing your DSCV credentials. The refresher course is scheduled on Feb 26-27.
The U.S. House of Representatives has unanimously passed the Haiti Assistance Income Tax Incentive (HAITI) Act (H.R. 4462), which would allow taxpayers to deduct on their 2009 income tax returns monetary contributions made between January 11, 2010, and March 1, 2010, for which a charitable contribution deduction is allowable, for the relief of victims in areas affected by the earthquake in Haiti. This legislation allows donors to deduct contributions made now on their 2009 tax returns, rather than wait until 2010 to claim the deduction. The Senate is expected to also pass identical legislation (S. 2936).
In the wake of this devastating earthquake disaster in Haiti we are encouraging everyone to lift our brothers and sisters in Haiti in our prayers.
The question on our minds now is: What can we do to help? Here are three things that come to my mind:
