Jesus said “but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life” (John 4:14, NRSV).
In the early 90’s, a group of Christian friends who shared a spiritual quest and a deep thirst for spiritual growth, gathered in prayer and reflection. What was desired, dreamed of, and labored for was a Christian community where sojourners in faith could be together in solitude and prayer. It was felt that an in-depth and comprehensive experience in spiritual development and spiritual leadership was required.
As the group reflected upon common experiences in spiritual formation, what emerged was a dream for an intentional, systematic (methodical), Christ-centered community for clergy and laity to focus on their faith journey. It was our intent to design an institute for spiritual growth that was both reflective of, and accessible to, the clergy and laity of the New York Annual Conference.
Wellspring was born in September of 1992, with a holistic vision of spiritual growth and specific training experiences in spiritual companioning and leadership. The Rev. Sheila Thompson served as Wellspring Director, 1992-1998, and the Rev. Dr. Robert C. Leibold served as Wellspring Director, 1998-2008. Ms. Gail Erdie assumed that role in the summer 2008. It has been an exciting and meaningful journey for the participants and staff. In faith, we have grown closer to God, to one another, and as Christian disciples of Jesus Christ. Should you become a member of Wellspring, we believe the program will be the same for you.
