Rebuilding Homes & Restoring Hope
Many families continue to deal with the adverse effects of the Hurricane Irene destruction that occurred last September 2011. Over 1,584 individuals from the Greene County area alone applied for FEMA assistance. More than 300 households are in need of various assistance.
Disaster response volunteers from the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church were on the ground immediately after the storm, working with local agencies to provide relief to survivors. We are now in the recovery phase, rebuilding homes and restoring hope. Please register now to join our volunteers.
What To Expect:
1. Type of work: Rebuilding: installing insulation, hanging sheet rock, replacing doors, cabinets, fixtures, painting, trim work, etc.
2. Areas/towns being worked in: Prattsville, Lexington, West Kill, Fleischmanns, and Margaretville.
3. Facilities for lodging/meals: Huntersfield Christian Training Center (HCTC) has several facilities including a dormitory, kitchen, & dining room. The dormitory has beds, showers, & a general meeting area. You will need to bring your own bedding (single beds), towels, & toiletries. Meals WILL be provided, but there are also several restaurants around if you'd like to go out to eat at times. The staff of HCTC are off on Sundays, so if you need meals on Sunday you will be responsible to prepare them. If HCTC is not available, we do have other housing options. The NYAC Volunteer Coordinator will work out those details with you.
4. Support Staff: Available on site including construction support.
5. Commute from HCTC to Work Site: Depends on work assignment, but generally about 5-15 miles.
6. Costs per person: Unknown total cost per person, but the Volunteer Registration Fee is $10/person (includes a VIM T-Shirt) and the HCTC cost is $15 per person, per night and that includes lodging and 3 meals.
7. Maximum team size: 30 volunteers per team— larger team will then be broken up into smaller work groups of about 8 per work site.
8. Insurance coverage for volunteers: For those residing in the NYAC (NY & CT), you will automatically be covered by our insurance when you register as a volunteer. For those residing outside of the NYAC, you are required to obtain insurance to cover your participants. Contact your Home Conference Mission Coordinator for more information.
9. Age requirement: Depends on the insurance coverage you have through your Home Conference. For those in the NYAC, there is no age limit. For all groups, we do ask that there is adult supervision of all minors: 1 adult per 3 minors and of course there is a certain level of maturity and ability needed for the type of work being done.
10. ERT Training Required?: No. Since we are now in the RECOVERY stage of relief, ERT Training is NOT required for volunteers.
