Children's Disaster Services Training

Rare Training Opportunity – Children’s Disaster Services

Caring for children after a disaster brings new volunteers to disaster work, often drawing from teachers and child care providers and others who work with children, according to Children’s Disaster Services. If you’ve thought about how a disaster affects children and have wanted to help, this May workshop is a unique opportunity to find out what Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) is all about and possibly to become a volunteer.

The United Methodist Church partners with CDS and Church of the Brethren in this training and utilizes their trained members in many recovery sites. The New England workshop is taking place in Litchfield, CT the weekend of May 3-4.

CDS is encouraging interested people in New England to sign up for THIS workshop. All CDS workshops (in Connecticut) after this will give Connecticut residents priority for registration, but for THIS one workshop the number of participants is unlimited.

Recently there have been requests from all of the New England states, asking about a CDS workshop that is near-by. Unfortunately, over the years, they have presented only a few workshops in the area.

Here are the dates and the location:

Litchfield, Connecticut
May 3 - 4, 2013

Friendship Baptist Church
441 Torrington Rd.

Since 1980 Children’s Disaster Services has been caring for children after disasters in shelters and assistance centers by providing volunteers specially trained and certified to care for children who have experienced a disaster. Using techniques that utilize toys that encourage expression, volunteers provide a calm safe and reassuring presence in the midst of the chaos created by a disaster. Although they are part of Church of the Brethren Disaster Ministries, their workshop is open to anyone over the age of 18. Please visit their web site for more information.
