Board of Ordained Ministry (BOOM)

The Board of Ordained Ministry Consists of:

  • Elders and Deacons in full connection
  • Associate members or Local Pastors who have completed the Course of Study
  • Laypersons, including Diaconal ministers
  • Women
  • Ethnic persons
  • Retired Ordained Clergy/person
  • Clergy in Extension Ministry
  • Cabinetperson in Extension Ministry
  • Cabinet Members

Its Functions Include:

  • An active program of enlistment and recruitment of candidates for ordained ministry, including candidates for the Order of Deacons and the Order of Elders. (para. 634.2a)
  • Annual training a sufficient number of mentors to work with candidates, local pastors and provisional members. (para. 634.2e)
  • Examination of all applicants and make full inquiry as to the fitness of the candidates for:
    • Annual election as a local pastor
    • Election to provisional membership
    • Election to full conference membership
    • Annual recommendation of clergy from another denomination
  • Interview and recommending candidates for:
    • Appointment as student local pastors
    • Ordination as deacons
    • Ordination as elders
    • Annual recommendation of students of other denominations
  • Interview and recommending applicants for professional certification in the areas sponsored by GBHEM.
  • Interview applicants and make recommendations concerning change in conference relationships:
    • Leave of absence
    • Retirement
    • Return to effective relation
    • Honorable location
    • Administrative location
    • Readmission of located persons
    • Discontinuance of provisional members
    • Readmission of discontinued provisional members
    • Reinstatement of discontinued local pastors
    • Sabbatical leave
    • Disability leave
    • Appointment as student
    • Termination
    • To or from less than full-time
  • Provide support services for the ordained minister?s career development
  • In cooperation with the cabinet, give training and guidance to local church pastor/staff parish relations committees.
  • Care for the administration of professional certification in the areas of Christian education, music, youth ministry, evangelism, spiritual formation, camp and retreat ministry, and older adult ministry.
  • Administration of the Ministerial Education Fund (MEF) for a variety of programs:
    • Enlistment
    • College aid
    • Seminary aid
    • Continuing education
    • Ethnic ministry and language training
    • Professional growth
  • Promote the observance of Ministry Sunday
  • Interview and recommending applicants for professional certification in the areas sponsored by GBHEM.
