The Valhalla United Methodist Church Nursery School is seeking to fill the position of Nursery
School Director & Head Teacher. For over 50 years, the VUMC Nursery School has provided
quality educational and social experiences and kindergarten readiness for pre-school children.
Our faith-based program is based on sound educational principles that include cooperative play,
discovery of creative abilities and individual worth in a loving Christian atmosphere.

The Nursery School Director is responsible for all aspects of coordinating and operating a
morning preschool program for children ages 2 years through pre-kindergarten. This includes
leadership of curriculum development, classroom management, staff development, marketing
and advertisement, staff recruitment, child enrollment processes, and preschool play and

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Lead a team of teachers and support staff in the operation of a premier Christian preschool, including day-to-day operation and routine special events.
  2. Serve as a warm and nurturing classroom teacher, creating and implementing developmentally appropriate activities with a positive management style that fosters strong family partnerships to support the student’s education.
  3. Develop and implement a marketing/advertising plan that creates interest in the preschool and fuels strong enrollment.
  4. Recruit and train teachers and other personnel as needed to staff preschool classrooms and special events.
  5. Establish enrollment processes that ensure children are enrolled efficiently, acclimated smoothly into their classroom, and monitored to achieve success.
  6. Function as primary contact person for parents/guardians on enrollment, assimilation, progress, and all other matters pertaining to the preschool.
  7. Regularly select and/or develop curriculum for a preschool children’s education program that is fun, educational, and appropriate for a Christian preschool environment.
  8. Implement, monitor and evaluate classroom management practices that assures a safe, secure, and orderly preschool environment is maintained at all times.
  9. Lead the creative use and proactive upkeep of children’s ministry facilities and grounds.
  10. Contribute to the development of an annual budget for the preschool ensuring needs are met and profitability targets are realized.
  11. Meet with staff and Nursery School Board on a regular basis.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:

This position requires a minimum of 3 to 5 years experience as a leader in a children’s
education capacity. Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
in early childhood education, child development, special education, or elementary education is
required. A master's degree is preferred. The successful individual will be a strong leader with a
solid work ethic, possess a passion for teaching children, utilize excellent communication skills,
and have the ability to function as an administrator. Other requirements include a valid New
York State teaching certificate and a CPR certification. Meeting and support of local CPSE staff
is essential. A working knowledge of creative programming related to children’s classes and
special events is a real plus.
