2018 Workshops
5/11/2018
Each member and guest of the NY Conference is invited to participate in a workshop on Saturday afternoon of Annual Conference. These workshops are being led by thought leaders from the UMC and will focus on practical ministry topics with the goal of giving participants something creative and valuable to take home to their own ministries. Please choose from one of the workshops below during your registration.

Practical Ways to Share Your Faith
Presenter: Rev. William T Chaney Jr, NCJ New Church Strategist, New Church Starts (Path 1), Discipleship Ministries, The United Methodist Church
Provides the building blocks for effective personal evangelism.  Jesus has commissioned each of us to proclaim his love and invite others into relationship with God.  In this workshop we will explore how to use the gifts and testimony God has given us to share our faith with others.

Moving from Activities to Outcomes in the Local Church
Presenter: Rev. Naomi Annandale, Director of Research and Strategic Evaluation, Discipleship Ministries, The United Methodist Church
Offers practical guidance for leaders of local churches to identify clearly stated and compelling outcomes that can transform their ministry and direct their valuable human and financial resources. If your congregation finds itself in a cycle of repeating activities with diminishing results, this workshop will encourage you to "push pause" on doing the same things the same way so that you can re-focus on measurable outcomes.

Funding A Church’s Mission Today
Presenter: Rev. Dr. Ken Sloane, Director of Stewardship and Connectional Ministries, Discipleship Ministries, The United Methodist Church
Churches that are successful — not only in funding their mission but in growing their mission -- are learning new approaches in the area of stewardship. Current generations are giving in new ways, and the former motivations for generosity don’t have the same attraction. The good news is, there are new tools that have never before been at our disposal. Join us as we explore what we need to learn to fund the mission and ministries of our church in the present age!

Developing Mission, Vision and Core Values for the Local Church
Presenter: Rev. Betsey Heavner, Retired Member of the NW Texas Conference.
Will give practical tools for discerning God’s will for your congregation so that you can align your ministry resources to reach your goals. Our Annual Conference has just gone through a long, intentional process that led to the development of Mission, Vision and Core Values for the Conference, and this workshop  offers a process by which your church can develop its own.

Equipping Communities for Mission
Presenter: Rev. Tom Vencuss, Coordinator of Mission Ministry, NY Conference
Engagement in meaningful mission is a key to congregational vitality and personal spiritual growth. This workshop will consider ways to engage and equip communities in mission ministries on local and global levels, and through disaster response.

Joining the Sanctuary Church Movement
Presenter:
Pastor Karina Feliz serving Central Valley UMC and Rev. Paul Fleck serving Hamden Plains UMC
Offers practical information and inspiration for church leaders answering the biblical mandate for hospitality. Topics will include offering sanctuary, support, safe space and accompaniment to our neighbors in vulnerable immigrant populations.
