Advanced Lay Servant Ministries Class:
Living Our United Methodist Beliefs
Taught by: Pastor Thomas Stubbs of Jesse Lee Memorial UMC and Jerry Eyster, Certified Lay Speaker.
Class will be taught live only over two Saturdays in September.  Class runs from 9:30 a.m. (registration) to 3:30 p.m. on September 16 and September 30.
Class will be held at Stevens Memorial UMC, 8 Shady Lane, South Salem, New York 10590.  There is no limit to the number of class participants.  Everyone is welcome to attend.
This advanced Lay Servant Ministries class explores our United Methodist heritage of message, mission and struggle from the beginnings of the movement in the 1700s to more recent challenges.  The general course goals include:

1. Discovering the place of doctrine in relation to the missional movement know as Methodism;
2. Developing an understanding of Wesleyan theology and its influence on the practical structure and disciplines of the first Methodists;
3. Acquiring knowledge of Methodist history and the formation of other Methodist denominations;
4. Exploring the Wesleyan understanding of grace and how it became key to the movement;
5. Describing and discussing the means of grace and how these disciplines lead to holiness of heart and life.

The class material will touch upon Wesley’s Methodist doctrine, practice and distinctives; the founding of Methodism in Britain and America; the development of Methodism in America; the Holiness Movement; the Social Gospel; Race and Methodism in America; and Women and Methodism in America. 
Required reading for the course is Bishop Kenneth Carder’s book Living Our Beliefs: The United Methodist Way.  It is available at Cokesbury and Amazon.  Please purchase and read this book prior to the first class.
Bishop Carder has stated, “Lost memory means lost identity and those with amnesia have to depend upon others to define them.  A church with no memory gets its identity from the culture and loses its power to influence the culture.”  Bishop Carder will be joining our class via zoom the afternoon of September 30 to discuss the material covered and to answer questions.
