United Methodist City Society Annual Meeting (Bronx: Tremont)
The 179th Annual Meeting of the United Methodist City Society will take place on Sunday, November 12th, 2017, 3:30pm at the Tremont United Methodist Church in the Bronx.
We are your partner in mission and ministry in the Metropolitan region. All member churches of the City Society from the Long Island East, Long Island West, Metropolitan and the New York-Connecticut districts are entitled to be present and vote during the business portion of the meeting and the election of the Board of Directors for the coming year. You can bring as many people as your wish. All churches within the bounds of these districts are members of the Society.
We are very excited about the theme of our annual meeting: “SEE ALL THE PEOPLE.” Now we did not invent this theme. The Discipleship Ministries under the direction of Rev. Dr. Junius B. Dotson reminds us that we must move out from our pews, beyond the walls of churches into the community to make disciples of Jesus Christ to transform the world. And we can begin by transforming our ministry from a building to the community.
Dr. Dotson says:
Discipleship Ministries believes that for too long The United Methodist Church has looked for a quick fix to help guide our discipleship efforts. Therefore, we are called to be in relationship with the communities that surround our churches. We are called to recapture a spirit of movement. We must shift our thinking from fixing churches to true discipleship.
Our meeting is hosted by the Tremont United Methodist Church and will feature its community-centered ministry to children. UMCS supports both their afterschool program and their summer camp program which reaches beyond the walls of the church.
Our featured speaker of the afternoon is Jonathan Soto, Esq. who serves as the Executive Director of the newly formed “Center for Faith and Community Partnerships” at the Mayor’s Office, which empowers neighborhoods and forges partnerships with faith and community leaders by building capacity to mobilize civic action.
Jonathan has been an activist and community organizer committed to inclusivity and progress for communities throughout New York City, and particularly communities of faith. In June of 2015, Mayor de Blasio appointed Soto to serve as the Senior Community Liaison for the Mayor’s Clergy Advisory Council, which engages communities of faith in the formation of City policy and administration of City services. Soto is a graduate of Fordham University and from Brooklyn Law School. He is a rising star in the Latina/o Community.
Come and hear how the UMCS is finding ways to provide new ministry to communities and not just to church buildings.
The attached flyer has a registration attachment to it. There is no cost to attend. However, we would appreciate an RSVP so that Tremont can prepare for a reception following the meeting.
We look forward to seeing you. Here is the online registration form to RSVP:
