May Application Deadlines


The Gloster B. Current, Sr. Scholarship Committee of the New York Annual Conference will give at least one $1000 scholarship to a person of African descent interested in pursuing a career in public service, such as ministry, social work, healthcare or government service. Applicants must be a member of a United Methodist Church and attend an accredited institution of higher education. The application deadline is May 31, 2021.

The New York Education Society (NYES) Awards: 2021 Application 

The NYES is for undergraduate and graduate students who are members of United Methodist Churches and campus ministries within the New York Annual Conference. Students must an accredited college, university, technical, professional or graduate school. Awards typically range from $500 to $1000 for each academic year. Priority is given to 1) first-time applicants, 2) students entering helping professions, and 3) those actively involved in local UMC/campus ministry programs. Deadline for submitting an application is May 31, 2021.

Mustard Seed Migration Grants
Inspired by the well-known parable about growth, Mustard Seed Migration Grants—a new grant program from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) —provide 50 congregations with up to $2,000 in funding to support one-time, community-based service projects.  Churches will have the opportunity to assist refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented persons and migrants of all types in their own cities and towns. 

United Methodist churches located in the United States are eligible to apply. Only 50 grants will be awarded. This is a competitive process and not all applicants will receive grants. Completed applications are due by Sunday, May 16, 2021.

Grant recipients will receive an award notification on June 1, 2021. Approved grant activities may begin as early as June 15 and end as late as December 15. United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMEF) Scholarships
UMHEF offers several scholarship opportunities to United Methodist students attending or seeking to attend a United Methodist-related institution of higher education. Last year, UMHEF awarded more than 2.3 million to over 1,000 students. Go here to learn about UMEF scholarship programs and criterion. The application season for UMHEF main scholarship programs for the 2021-2022 academic year ends on March 1, 2021. 

GBHEM Ethnic-in-Service Training Grants 
The United Methodist Church allocates part of the World Communion Sunday offerings to the GBHEM for ethnic leadership development. As part of its ongoing mission to nurture United Methodist leaders  (both lay and clergy) GBHEM uses those funds to award Ethnic-in-Service Training Grants. These grants are awarded in sums up to $10,000 and are given to programs designed to bolster recruitment, training and retention of ethnic persons for leadership positions at every level of the church and its ministry.

Partnerships and collaborative efforts in campus ministry, chaplaincy and institutions of higher education and general agencies are encouraged, but GBHEM also considers applications for innovative programs in other ministry settings. Proposals may encompass ministries related to areas such as children’s homes, retirement homes, camping and retreat centers, hospitals, the United Methodist Committee on Relief and the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission. The application deadline is March 5, 2021.

February Application Deadlines

United Methodist City Society Summer Task Force Funding
The United Methodist City Society provides support to vacation bible school and summer day camp programs in United Methodist churches throughout New York City.  This initiative is known as the Summer Task Force (STF).  Churches planning to operate summer day camp and vacation bible school programs for a minimum of 10 days are eligible for funding ranging from $1,000 - $5,000.  A representative from your church must attend one of the virtual information sessions on either Tuesday, February 23rd at 10am or Wednesday, February 24th at 4pm. 

Both information sessions will be held via Zoom.  After you have RSVP’d to the information session of your choice, the meeting information will be emailed to you. 

The United Methodist City Society Virtual Enrichment Academy
The United Methodist City Society is launching a six-week Virtual Enrichment Academy. This opportunity is FREE for students in grades K – 7 who attend a UMC after-school program, summer program and Sunday School or church within the New York-Connecticut, Metropolitan, Long Island East and Long Island West districts.  Students will enjoy virtual classes taught by professional programs that the City Society has engaged.  

The classes will include fun engineering classes using Lego bricks with the program “Snapology”; beginner friendly cooking classes with the program “Allergic to Salad”; immersive and engaging instructional music education with the program “Building Beats”; and an advanced Culinary Masterclass for the junior chef who knows his/her way around the kitchen taught by a professional chef.  To register for the Virtual Enrichment Academy, parents must complete a required registration form and return it to Aisha Campbell by February 26, 2021.
