FEMA Extends Deadline for NY Homeowners & Businesses


The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline in 13 New York counties for homeowners and small businesses to apply for assistance related to superstorm Sandy. The new deadline is Jan. 28, 2013; the previous one was Dec. 31.

According to a December 11 online report from Newsday, FEMA spokesman Ed Conley said, “The extension is for homeowners and renters registering for FEMA disaster assistance grants and for homeowners, renters and businesses applying for SBA low-interest recovery loans.”

Counties included in the extension are: Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), Nassau, New York (Manhattan), Richmond (Staten Island), Rockland, Westchester, Suffolk, Queens, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan and Ulster.

Homeowners can register online at www.disasterassistance.gov, by phone at 800-621-3362 or 800-462-7585, or via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov.

Small business owners usually have 60 days after a natural disaster to apply for low-interest loans. They should call the SBA at 631-454-0750 or go to, http://www.sba.gov and select, “2012 Hurricane Recovery Information.”
