For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. -  The Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church is joining the global community in mourning the death of Africa University Vice Chancellor Professor Munashe Furusa, who died last week on January 13, 2021 after a short illness in Mutare, Zimbabwe.

The bishops, who have already sent a personal condolences letter to his widow, Dr Zanele Furusa, released a statement today honoring Professor Furusa for all the work he has done as leader of the crown jewel of Methodist education in Africa.

In the statement, the bishops noted that “Africa University has lost a great visionary and The United Methodist Church has lost a great leader.  In the death of Africa University Vice Chancellor Professor Munashe Furusa, a dark cloud has passed over the valley of dreams, our crown jewel of Methodist education in Africa.”

Noting that Professor Furusa helped transform AU from a UMC institution into one that addressed the needs of the world, the bishops gave thanks to God for the gift of Professor Furusa and for his leadership that changed an institution and the whole United Methodist Church.
