Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Shirley F. Truran, 86, who died peacefully on August 21, 2015 with family at her side. She was the widow of the Reverend Kenneth Truran. Rev. Truran served congregations in Peekskill, Hobart and Margaretville. He retired in 1976 and died in 2003.
Shirley was born in Dry Brook, New York on May 28, 1929. She grew up on a farm in the Catskill Mountains and moved from Arkville, NY to St. Augustine, FL in 1982 with her late husband. A charming, spirited woman loved and admired by many, Shirley enjoyed nothing more than helping others, spending time with her family and friends and being “Mama” to her two cats.
Shirley was the mother of Keith Valk of Oneonta, NY; Kevin Valk of New Kingston, NY; Suzann Maass, St. Augustine, FL; Sandra Valk of Fleischmanns, NY; and Stacy Valk Boice of Pomona Park, FL. She was also the proud Ginga or Grandma to Paul Maass, Orion and Chamberlain Hinkley, Kaleb and Justin Valk, Charity Valk Mack and Thaddeus Valk. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her brother, Allen Fairbairn; daughters in-law, Gail Valk and Priscilla Valk; sons-in-law, Clayton Boice, Ken Maass, Tim Hinkley, Franz Edlinger, and Ray Ploutz, and two nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service was held at 2pm on Friday, August 28 at the St. Augustine Shores United Methodist Church.
An informal graveside service is planned for 2pm on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the Clovesville Cemetery in Fleischmanns, NY.
