Mr. Sunghee "Sam" Lee


Sunghee “Sam” Lee, beloved husband of Rev. Koonae Annie Lee, pastor of the Stratford United Methodist Church. Mr. Lee died on July 31, 2013. He is the father of Patrick, Mark and David Lee, father-in-law of Jane Cha-Lee and Hannah Lee, and grandfather of Josiah Lee. Sam is also survived by his brother, Tae Hee Lee, and sister-in-law, Okhe Lee and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Tokyo, Japan on March 15, 1935, and emigrated to Korea at the age of 12. Sunghee graduated from the Choong Ang High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from the Seoul National University, South Korea. He then served as a high school teacher and as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of Korea. In 1957 he immigrated to the United States to study as part of the Senator J. William Fulbright Scholar Program at CUNY Brooklyn College as a PhD candidate, where he eventually graduated with a master of arts degree in mathematics in 1972. Mr. Lee then worked at Met Life, CBS Inc., and the IBM Corporation in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Visitation hours will be held at the Dennis and D’Arcy Funeral Home (2611 Main Street, Stratford, CT, which is across the street from the Stratford Church), Friday, August 2nd from 5pm until 9pm. The Service of Death and Resurrection will be held at the Stratford United Methodist Church (2600 Main Street, Stratford, CT 06614-5893), Saturday, August 3rd at 9:30am. A reception will be held in the social hall of the church. Burial arrangements have been set for 2pm at the Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, NY. A reception following the internment will be held at the Ban Suk United Methodist Church (11 Powells Lane, Old Westbury, NY).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Sam Lee Memorial Fund” of the Stratford Church (note address above).
