Mr. Robert G. Titus

Mr. Robert G. Titus

Robert G. Titus, life partner of the Rev. James M. (Mac) Speights since July of 1989 (and husband since March of 2013), passed away at Hospice House on Long Island on June 28, 2013, after a month-long hospitalization including three cardiac arrests.

Bob was born June 14, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY.  He was a World War II veteran, enlisting at age 18. He became a surgical technician, and served on hospital ships throughout the war, traveling across oceans several times, caring for wounded and maimed soldiers. His service included both the European and Pacific theaters.

Upon discharge in 1945, Bob attended Farmingdale School of Agriculture on Long Island and received a degree in Landscape Design. He then worked in a landscape firm for sixteen years, after which he became assistant director at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. Many of the magnificent trees one sees there were planted under the guiding hand of Bob. He retired in 1974 and built a magnificent garden on his property.

After meeting Mac, Bob became active in pushing the envelope for GLBT equality on Long Island, in New York State and the United States. He died a few days after the Supreme Court made its landmark decision overturning DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) in June of 2013.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Mac at 43 Dewey Street, Huntington, NY 11943. Memorial donations can be made in Bob's name to Hospice House, 101 Laurel Road, East Northport, NY 11731, or to a GLBT charity of your choice.
