Retired Local Pastor Doris Foltz Arnold


Doris Foltz Arnold, born on May 2, 1926 in Hagerstown,  Maryland, died at the age of age 87, on December 15, 2013 at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, Connecticut.

Doris earned a B.A. degree at Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Virginia and was ordained that year in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). On April 1, 1953 in Beaver Creek, MD, she married Raymond M. Arnold who died on April 26, 1998. After completing a master’s degree in Religious Education at Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky in 1951, she served as an associate minister of the Paris (Kentucky) Christian Church until 1955.  She worked as an education supervisor at the Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, New York from 1956 to 1983.  During her tenure at the Wassaic Developmental Center, she was a member of the Mentally Retarded Educators Association and served as its secretary from 1957 to 1983.  Columbia University awarded her a master’s degree in 1964 and she completed doctoral studies at Southern Illinois Universityin 1968.

Doris Arnold’s relationship with the New York Conference began in 1978 with a local preacher’s license and was appointed to Dover Plains and Wingdale; effective January 1, 1982 she served a single charge, Dover Plains.  Her ministry in the conference concluded with retirement in 1989.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, December 28th at the Dover Plains United Methodist Church, 26 Mill Street, Dover Plains, NY with the Reverend Carl B. Franson officiating. Burial will take place at Beaver Creek Cemetery in Beaver Creek, MD at a later date.
