Ms. Joyce M. Reid

3/23/2015

Let us remember Joyce Reid widow of Jacques (John F.) Reid who entered life eternal on March 23, 2015. Her pastor, the Reverend Dr. Karen Monk, describes Joyce as “a gracious lady and beloved in our community. She was a faithful steward of all God’s gifts to her, and a joy to know.”

Joyce was born May 28, 1916 to William B. Martin and Laura E. Bach in Tannersville, NY. She was employed by Paul Fromer and subsequently the Fromer Corporation for many years.

Joyce Reid was a member of the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church, where she served in a variety of activities and ministries. The photo on this page portrays Joyce as she led the making of Christmas baskets, ten years ago, at the age of 88!

The following tribute to Joyce is found in the memoir of her husband the Reverend John Filson Reid (1992 Journal of the New York Annual Conference, pp. 512-515) – “In 1974 his beloved (wife) Estella died suddenly and his life crumbled. Alone four years, with Ian and Orlinda in college, the parsonage was now cold and empty. It was Joyce Valk, a lady from the Haines Falls Church, pillar of strength and long-time friend who brought new meaning to his life. They were married in 1978 in Haines Falls, with his son the Reverend Ian Reid conducting the ceremony.”

Survivors include her children William Valk, Beverly Elbert and Dianne Slusar, as well as her stepchildren Alex Reid and Orlinda, also 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husbands James Valk and Rev. John Filson Reid, and her brother.

Friends and parishioners may greet the family this Friday, March 27, 2015 at Aston Basagic Funeral Home at 7742 Route 23A, Hunter, NY from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. The Service of Death and Resurrection will be held at the Kaaterskill UMC, 5942 Main Street, Tannersville, NY 12485, on Saturday, March 28 at 11:00 AM.

The family suggests consideration of a donation in memory of Joyce Reid to the Kaaterskill UMC (General Fund) at PO Box 225, Tannersville, NY 12485.
