Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Alma R. Detweiler, 95, of Lititz, PA who died on Monday, June 7, 2021 at Legend of Lititz. Alma was born in Butler, NJ on November 3, 1925, the daughter of Everett and Janet (Palmer) Ross.
She was the loving wife of the late Rev. Herbert W. Detweiler, who passed away in May 2009. Rev. Detweiler served the New York Conference starting in 1962 and was ordained an elder in 1971. He pastored several churches in New York: Grace UMC of Ridgebury and Slate Hill, Memorial UMC in Modena, Epworth UMC in Queens, Pleasant Valley UMC and Bangall UMC. He retired in 1988, and served the Delaware Water Gap/Poplar Valley charge in the Eastern PA Conference for several years in retirement.
Over the years, Alma worked as an administrative assistant at various businesses. As the wife of a United Methodist minister, she was active in each church that they served over a span of 38 years, as well as the communities that they lived in. Alma was instrumental in organizing the Senior Citizen Center in Brooklyn, NY, and was also very involved with the Senior Citizen Center in Cresco, PA. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed spending time at home with her family.
Alma is survived by her son, Ross E. Detweiler and his wife, Mary, of Lititz, PA. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Rebecca, Elizabeth, Debbie and Jessica LoVerso; and Kathleen and Ian Detweiler; as well as five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Susan LoVerso, and her sister, Frances Franz.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Alma’s final resting place will be with her husband at the Mountainhome UMC Cemetery in Mountainhome, PA.
