Let us remember the life and ministry of Dorothy M. (Barlow) Brown, 90, of Shelton, CT, who died on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Bishop Wicke Health Center in Shelton. She was born on December 10, 1927 in Treadwell, NY.
For 51 years she was the loving wife of Rev. Paul W. Brown, who predeceased her in 2003. Dorothy and Paul met at Ohio Wesleyan University and were married on July 7, 1951. Rev. Brown was a clergy member of the New York Annual Conference for 37 years, serving Kenoza Lake, Jeffersonville, Fosterdale, Cochecton Center, Andes, Pleasant Valley, Union Grove, Goshen, Cairo, South Cairo, Walton, Cold Spring, South Highland, Greenport, and West Sullivan, all in New York, as well as Winsted, CT. Paul and Dorothy participated in Conference Youth Institutes at Oakwood School and Camp Epworth. Upon his retirement in 1988 they lived in Connecticut, and they moved to the Wesley Village retirement community in Shelton, CT in 1992, where they were active in the community and at First UMC of Shelton.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Susan Smith and her husband, Gordon, of Harwinton, CT; Timothy Brown and his wife, Donna, of New Windsor, NY; and Meg McGinn and her husband, Rich, of Torrington, CT. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Trevor Smith and his wife, Jessica, of Simsbury, CT; Lauren Zordan and her husband, Greg, of Torrington, CT; Kevin Smith and his fiancée, Alexis Veith, of Harwinton, CT; Erin Talarico and her husband, Bill, of New Windsor, NY; Donny Preiss and his wife, Jennifer, of Bethel, CT; and Matthew McGinn of Torrington, CT. She also leaves three great-grandchildren, Madison and Braden Preiss and Mara Smith, and many cherished nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Schluep, of Oneonta, NY and her brother, Theodore Barlow, of Chambersburg, PA.
The family would like to give special thanks to the many staff members and residents of Wesley Heights who made such a difference in their parents’ lives. Their love and devoted care will never be forgotten and the family is forever grateful.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at 1:30 pm at First UMC of Shelton, 188 Rocky Rest Rd, Shelton, CT. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Bishop Wicke Health Center, 584 Long Hill Avenue, Shelton, CT 06484.
