Mrs. Ruth A. Spoor

4/13/2020

Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Ruth Almgren Spoor, 92 who passed away peacefully on April 13, 2020 at the Wilson Health Care Center, Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, MD.

Born on September 14, 1927 in Worcester, MA, Ruth was the daughter of O. Philip and Lillie Almgren. She had two sisters, Lynn Jenkins and Helen, and a brother, Herbert, all of whom predeceased her. She graduated from Green Mountain College in VT and from Boston University with a degree in liberal arts. She went on to receive her Master of Education degree from Boston University.

Her professional career included serving as dean of women at Endicott Junior College in Beverly, MA and work at State Mutual Life of Worcester, MA. She also served as director of the Katherine Gibbs School in New York City, and later worked for the chairman of American Express. An active member of the choir at Christ Church in Manhattan, she met and married Rev. Ralph Spoor in 1967. She continued to stay active in The United Methodist Church, organizing flower festivals and other events to assist Rev. Spoor with his ministries.

Her husband, Rev. Ralph Spoor, served churches in the New York Conference beginning in 1948. Those churches include: Ossining Heights UMC; Trinity and Chelsea UMCs in Beacon, NY; Ellenville UMC; Tarrytown UMC; Christ UMC in Manhattan (associate pastor); Nichols UMC in Trumbull, CT; Mary Taylor Memorial UMC in Milford, CT and Southhold UMC on Long Island. Rev. Spoor also served as District Superintendent of the Connecticut Central District (1969-1975) and as executive director of the United Methodist Development Fund.

Ruth retired with her husband in 1987. They enjoyed their travels by Airstream trailer and Matthews Cruiser to many parts of the U.S. and Canada. When not travelling internationally, they wintered in Florida at their home in Fort Myers and summered in Vermont at their camp at Lake Groton.

Ruth had many interests and talents. She played the piano, loved music, and was highly skilled at flower arrangements. She also arranged international travel tours. However, the primary focus of Ruth’s life was assisting her husband in his career and interests, and caring for their daughters, Nancy, Cindy and Susan, who brought her great pleasure. Ruth and Ralph moved to Asbury Methodist Village in 2003 to be closer to their daughters, all living in the Washington DC metropolitan area. They celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in November 2019.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Ralph; her daughters, Nancy Spoor (Jim Conley), Cindy Spoor (Dale Thorenson) and Sue Spoor (Charlie Stek); her grandchildren, Alex Stek, Maureen Conley, Kelly Thorenson (Amber), Jennifer Thorenson and Meghan Gabriel (Kyle); and her great-grandchildren, Ava, Abi and Eden Thorenson, and Kaiden, Knox and Macalister Gabriel.

The family would like to recognize and express their deep appreciation to all the staff of Kindley Assisted Living and the Wilson Nursing Center for the compassionate care they provided to Ruth and Ralph during this time that was made especially difficult by the necessary social distancing that is in place.

Memorial service plans will be finalized at a later date. Memorial gifts can be made in Ruth’s name to: Asbury Foundation, 5285 Westview Drive, Suite 200, Frederick, MD 21703.
