The Reverend Barbara J. Ibarra

The Reverend Barbara J. Ibarra

Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Rev. Barbara J. Ibarra, 86, who died on Friday, October 22, 2021 at home surrounded by her family. Barbara was born October 18, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY.

Barbara left Brooklyn for Indiana to attend Taylor University, earning her BA in Psychology.  Never one to stop learning, she went on to attend New York University and Drew University, earning multiple master’s degrees in the field of psychology. She also attended The New York Theological Seminary, where she earned a Master of Theology degree.

Barbara served as pastor at North Blenheim UMC from 1980 to 1984. She was appointed to Ellenville UMC in 1984, where she served until her retirement in 2000. In retirement she did much pulpit supply, and from 2013 to 2018 she was appointed to Guilford UMC in the Upper New York Conference. Her family says it is impossible to measure her positive influence or how many lives she touched through her tireless preaching, teaching, and reaching.

In addition to community outreach, Barbara was skilled in the kitchen. She took great pride in her Thanksgiving dinner presentation, including her apple pie which was a blue-ribbon contender. She also had a knack for interior design and was the consummate bargain hunter. She enjoyed seeking out just the right antique to add to her collection, always knowing that “they don’t make them like they used to.”
Barbara was a life-long resident of New York, living in Middleburgh for many years prior to moving to Cobleskill.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Carlos, whom she married June 21, 1965, and by her children: Jonathan (Cheryl) Ibarra of Stoddard, NH; Steven (Jill) Ibarra of Nazareth, PA; Lisa (Bill) Himme of Cobleskill; David (Karen) Ibarra of Dallas, TX; and Ana Brandt of Santa Ana, CA. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Joshua, Nathan, Elizabeth, Rebekah, Sarah, Danielle, Evan, Olivia, and Ava; and by a great-granddaughter, Haven. She was predeceased by her brother, Clifford Jacobsen.

Visitation will be from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Friday, November 5, 2021, at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, NY. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Cobleskill United Methodist Church, 109 Chapel St., Cobleskill, NY with Rev. Anna Blinn Cole officiating. Burial will follow in Richmondville Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to UMC Food Pantry, 109 Chapel St, Cobleskill, NY 12043
