Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Rev Carol A. (Fowler) Downs, 68, of Southington, CT, who passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2020 at MidState Medical Center.

Carol was born on October 6, 1951 in New Haven, CT to John and Helen (Thissell) Fowler.

Carol graduated from The Morgan School in Clinton, CT and went on to earn her bachelor's degree in human services from Southern New Hampshire University and her master's degree in library science from Southern University. Carol worked as a special education teacher for over 20 years.

In 2004, Carol made the decision to follow her longtime calling into pastoral ministry. She received her license to preach in 2005, and in 2011 became an associate member of the New York Conference. Most recently, Carol was enrolled in Drew Theological School as part of her journey to become an elder in The United Methodist Church. Carol served Derby UMC in CT, as well as East Pearl St and St. Andrew’s UMCs in New Haven, CT. At the time of her death she pastored Grace UMC in Southington, CT.

Music was a big part of Carol's life and she loved sharing this passion with her students and parishioners. Carol was a kind and caring person; her compassion allowed her to connect with people and her gentle voice brought comfort to so many.

She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Thomas L. Downs. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two adult children, Matthew Downs of New Haven, CT and Ryan Downs of New Hampshire. She is also survived by three nieces and their families: Kristen M. Rodrigues, Jennifer A. Watrous and Cheryl L. Watrous. She was predeceased by her sister, Judith Watrous, and her nephew, Timothy Watrous.

A celebration of Carol's life will be held at Grace United Methodist Church; details will be announced at a future date.
