The Reverend Clinton Lunt, Jr.

The Reverend Clinton Lunt, Jr.

Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Rev. Clinton Lunt, Jr., of Berea, OH, who died on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 of congestive heart failure at the age of 81. Rev. Lunt was a long-time Long Island resident, but had moved to Ohio to be near his family.

According to Rev. Lunt’s brother, his calling to ministry was the result of a serious duck-hunting accident in 1952 on the Great South Bay. A person gathering clams happened by and saved his life after he was injured. Clinton later attended Syracuse University and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.

He was ordained a deacon in the New York East Conference in 1962 and an elder in 1964. Rev. Lunt spent most of his career on Long Island, serving the following churches: Lawrence, NY; Grace Methodist, Valley Stream, NY; Huntington-Cold Spring Harbor, NY; First UMC, Central Islip, NY; Community UMC, East Norwich, NY. He also served as Chaplain at the Suffolk State School for several years in the 1970s. Rev. Lunt also served churches in Thomaston, CT; Warwick, NY and Bloomville, NY.

Wardean Henry, a member of the Huntington-Cold Spring Harbor church, said, “He was a very fine man…and well received by the members of the United Methodist Church.” According to his daughter Allison, “He really loved Long Island. That was really his home.”

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Lunt, a daughter, Allison Stallard, and a son, Daniel Lunt, all of Berea, OH, as well as a sister, Darien Vogelsberg of Canton, GA.  His first wife, Nancy Lunt, to whom he was married for 38 years, died in 2001.

Rev. Lunt was cremated. A memorial service is being planned for this summer at the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf in Mill Neck, NY. Donations in Rev. Lunt’s memory can be made to the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, 40 Frost Mill Road, Mill Neck, NY 11765.
