The Reverend Matthew V. Labriola


Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Rev. Matthew Valentino Labriola, 89, of Brewster, MA, who died at home on Thursday, August 9, 2018 after a quiet battle with cancer.

He was born on February 14, 1929 in Passaic, NJ to Michael and Mary Dardano Labriola. Rev. Labriola graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ and Drew University Theological School in Madison, NJ.

During his ministry in the New York Conference he served the following churches: Memorial UMC in Modena, NY, Liberty UMC in Newburgh, NY, and Trinity UMC in New Britain, CT. Rev. Labriola began his ministry in the Northern New Jersey Conference, serving Asbury and West Portal UMCs, High Bridge UMC, and Bergen Highlands UMC. Rev. Labriola retired from the NY Conference in 1994. He served several churches in his retirement: Sloatsburg UMC in NY, and Boonton UMC and Franklin Lakes UMC in NJ.

Rev. Labriola was widely known for his popular art ministry programs throughout New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra, of 26 years, as well as by his former wife, Patricia Binder, of Tuscon, AZ and their 5 children: Leslie of Franklin, MA; Kathy of Berkley, CA; Peter of Berkley, CA; Jean Drake of Bensen, AZ; and Paul of Ridgewood, NJ. He is also survived by four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held at the Northside UMC in Brewster, MA at 11:00am on Saturday, September 22, 2018. The service will be followed by a luncheon at the church. Memorial donations may be sent to Northside UMC, 701 Airline Rd, Brewster, MA 02631.
