The Reverend Paul M. Ewing

4/23/2019

Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Rev. Paul M. Ewing, 92, of South Windsor, CT, who died on April 23, 2019.

Paul was the fifth child of a tenant farmer. He began his education at the College of Idaho, and continued at Syracuse University (B.A.), Boston University (M.Div.) and the New York School of Theology (D.Div.). He joined the Air Force during the Korean War. Paul studied Russian at Syracuse University, where he met and fell in love with his wife-to-be, Jeanne. Paul and Jeanne married and relocated to England, where he translated Russian for the Air Force and coached the unit's baseball team.

Paul's life's work as a Methodist minister began after their return from England. His broad curiosity and passion for life fed his unwavering dedication to the churches he served:  Stratford UMC in Connecticut and Woodbury and Bellport UMCs in Long Island, NY. Paul thrived on caring for everyone's spiritual well-being, regardless of the situation life had led them to. After 35 years in pastoral ministry Paul retired in 1991. In retirement he continued counseling people in need.

Paul also enjoyed a lifelong interest in art, particularly silk screening, as well as his other top passions: baseball and peanut butter. His long life was devoted to service - to his country, his ministry and his family.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanne M. Ewing, who relates, "What I will miss most is having Paul at my side each day and feeling his generous hugs, his arms wrapped around my shoulders. Our shared solid and dependable love allowed us to meet the challenges, sorrows and joys of our life together."

Paul will also be remembered by their five children: Brent Ewing, his wife, Kelly, and sons Jordan and Seth of Seattle, WA; Todd Ewing of Ellsworth, ME; Julie McNeal and her husband, Beacher, of Andover, CT; Curtis Ewing, his wife, Debbie, and children Ilima and Nathaniel of Vallejo, CA; and Melissa Byrne and her husband, Jim, of Enfield, CT.
