The Reverend Richard S. Monkman

Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Rev. Dr. Richard Stuart Monkman, 94, of Unionvale, NY who passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022.

Richard was born on January 1, 1928 to Catherine Appleby and Louis Monkman in Roseau, Minnesota. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the US Navy and served during the Korean War.

Upon returning from the war, Richard attended seminary. He was licensed to preach in 1955 and ordained full elder in the New York East Conference in 1958. Richard earned his doctorate in theology at Drew University and devoted his life to the ministry. In the NY East and NY conferences he pastored St. James UMC in Lynbrook, NY (associate); Cannondale UMC in CT; Wakefield Grace UMC, Bronx NY; St. Paul’s UMC, Inwood NY; First UMC, Torrington, CT; and Pound Ridge UMC in NY. He retired in 1993.

In 1956, while attending Edinburgh University for a semester of theological studies, he met and married the love of his life, Margaret R. H. Jones, in London, England. Richard and Margaret had three children, Richard, Jonathan and Elisabeth. They shared over 50 happy years together.

After Richard retired he spent his time with his family, traveled, and published two novels. Through the years, he also enjoyed spending family time on Chebeague Island in Maine, where they owned a beautiful property in a quiet cove.

Richard was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, and son Jonathan. He is survived by his son Richard Monkman; his daughter, Elisabeth Pancio; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at the Pound Ridge Community Church in Pound Ridge, NY on November 5th, 2022, at 11:00 am with Rev. Steve Kim officiating.
